Sea Kayaking with Killer Whales, (Orcinus Orca) We sit motionless in our sea kayaks just off Vancouver Island. Our group is pulled in close together waiting. Then a loud puff shoots our glance to the side as a five foot tall dorsal fin of a killer whale rises out of the water heading our way. Moments later, it begins it's rise again followed by the tell tale puff just meters off our bows... Just another perfect day watching Orcas from kayaks in BC with Out For Adventure.
Explore Majestic Coastal British Columbia by Kayak Join us on our Orca Encounters tour as we ply the waters of British Columbia's Inside Passage to sea kayak with Orcas. This unforgettable journey begins when we board the water taxi in Campbell River on Vancouver Island. Your guide is your host on this coastal marine tour which delivers us to our Orca Outpost base camp opposite the Robson Bight, Johnstone Strait, home of the Northern Resident Orcas. Here, we will explore the areas most frequented by the Killer Whales and other marine wildlife. Robson Bight Ecological Reserve The Robson Bight is located in Johnstone Strait on the Vancouver Island shore. Johnstone Strait is a relatively narrow passage that attracts Killer Whales to it's rich waters each summer making it the best place to view Orcas in the world! It's also the best place to sea kayak with the Killer Whale. The Bight is an Ecological Reserve for the whales and within it's boundaries are the famous rubbing beaches. The resident Killer Whales make regular visits to the pebbly beaches to rub and roll themselves on. Across from the rubbing beaches, perched high atop a cliff is a research outpost that we hike up to. The hike up is an experience in itself, passing through an incredible rain forest we wind our way up at an easy pace. At the top we literally step out of the forest onto a rocky outlook with the vista of a mountain top overlooking Johnstone Strait and the Robson Bight. Here is a priceless opportunity to ask questions with knowledgeable people who are recording every whale that passes through the Bight. Listen to the Whales on our Hydrophone We do not chase the whales but they often come very close to our kayaks giving the best view of an Orca whale you'll ever get! With our sea kayaks sitting stationary and together, the whales know where we are, and pass us uncaringly while leaving us safe and in high spirits. This is the essence of sea kayaking with Killer Whales. When our portable hydrophone is dropped over the side of the kayak we all listen for the incredible sounds of the whales communicating which is surreal. Of course mother nature can not be willed or controlled any more than the wild Orca, however we can be very certain of viewing these magnificent animals on this tour due to the fact that they pass through the Strait virtually every day. | While we sit in our kayaks, cameras in hand, the sounds of the whales are heard through our portable hydrophone. Our guides get you into the right area at the right time for a close encounter of the whale kind. |
Exciting Wildlife Viewing What makes this kayaking tour even more exciting is the abundance of shore and marine wildlife. There are Bald Eagles, Black Bears, Black Tailed Deer, Mink, River Otters, Sea Lions, Pacific White Sided Dolphins and Dalls' Porpoises. As the tide recedes it reveals a cornucopia of discovery with star fishes, sea anemones, shell fish, jelly fish, and the list goes on. Bring your camera and lots of film, because everywhere you look is another picture!Fine Dining and Cuisine As with all Out For Adventure tours we offer fine cuisine for our meals.
